The former prime minister's daughter, Maryam Nawaz, said on Thursday that the fate of Nawaz Sharif would be decided by the people instead of any court. While addressing a convention of PML-N women workers at a marriage hall in Abid Market in connection with NA-120 bye-election, Maryam raised questions over parameters of justice in the country. She said.
"Pervez Musharraf, who violated the constitution, is sitting abroad. A certified liar (Imran) who made the country hostage and attacked the Supreme Court had taken refuge on mountains and being declared 'sadiq and ameen". "Why was Nawaz Sharif sent home at a time when the country was moving forward and achieving the goal and progress?" Maryam questioned. When all conspiracies under the cover of rigging, sits-ins and Panama leaks failed, Nawaz was disqualified on the basis of "iqama."
Maryam said she remained with her father during the last four years and faced all the conspiracies including Dawn and Panama leaks. She said those who ridiculed Jangla Bus, dengue crisis and development projects would have to face wrath of public when they would come to seek votes from NA-120. She said Nawaz was elected thrice from this constituency and people would vote for the PML-N on September 17 for restoring sanctity of ballot papers. "The opponents of development works in Lahore are asking for votes in bye-elections. People must hold them accountable on September 17 for their opposition to developmental works," she demanded.
Maryam said when she started election campaign in 2013 general elections, there was darkness in houses but now there is no load shedding. "People are asking why the journey of development was stopped by ousting Nawaz Sharif from his office," she added.
She also asked the party workers to pray for good health of her mother so that she could come back. Speaking on the occasion, MNA Shaista Pervaiz Malik urged the party workers to come out of their houses for the campaign. She asked the women workers to reach out to voters of the constituency to spread the party message.
Maiza Hameed, Majid Zahoor, Farzana Butt, Nasreen Nawaz, Syed Touseef Shah, Shehbaz Haider and Farkhanda Malik were also present on the occasion. Although there are over three dozen candidates in the run but the real contest is expected between the PML-N and PTI candidates. Maryam is not only regularly visiting the constituency but also holding meetings with the supporters of the PML-N.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate Dr Yasmin Rashid blamed the PML-N for misusing everything, be it state resources or animals, to win the bye-election of NA-120. "Maryam Bibi and her party men are using state machinery in violation of code of conduct given by the Election Commission," she said. PTI senior leader Shah Mehmud Qureshi also blamed the ruling PML-N for using state machinery in NA-120 bye-election.
The PPP-nominated candidate Faisal Mir is also running the election campaign. On Thursday, the PPP held a public gathering at Islampura. Moreover, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has formally issued summary of polling scheme for holding by-election in NA-120 scheduled for 17th of next month. According to the Election Commission, there are 321786 registered voters in the constituency. There would be 103 male while 98 female and 19 combined polling stations.
