KP government has approved the PC-I of 13 sites of hydropower projects with a capacity of 1322 megawatts, said Economic Review of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for financial year 2015-16. The government of Pakistan has signed a loan agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the development of hydropower potential in KP province.
Under this project, Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) is constructing two projects having a total installed capacity of 196MW including 17MW Ranolia hydropower project (Kohistan), 2.6MW Machai hydropower project (Mardan).
Under the same loan facility, the feasibility studies of three sites were carried out and based on these studies, the PC-I for these sites have been prepared, including PC-I for Jabori. In addition to construction projects, the Energy and Power Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has also started feasibility studies on various tributaries in the province.
During the feasibility study on various sites, the number of projects has been increased to 15 with total potential of 1911MW. Feasibility studies on these projects are in progress. Six such feasibility studies have already been completed whereas five more were also due to complete three years back. The review said that KP possess hydroelectricity generation capacity which it exploited could provide the power for industrial sector at a lower price offsetting the competitive disadvantage of industrial sector in the province.
It said that according to State of Industry Report 2014, electricity generated through hydel source in Pakistan is 32671 GWh, which is about 31 percent of the total electricity generated in the country in which KP produce 54 percent of the total hydel generation of electricity. Existing hydel stations in Tarbela, Warsak, Dargai and Malakand located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are connected to the national grid line. Nearly 76 percent of the country's total hydel potential or 45,862 megawatts of 59.796 megawatts can be harnessed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. At present, the KP is generating just 3,849MW electricity from its operational hydropower projects, while projects under implementation have the potential to generate 9,482MW.
The provincial government is carrying out work as many as 28 such projects, Feasibility studies of 77 projects have been completed while raw sites with a potential for generating 8,930MW of electricity have also been identified in the province.
In domestic sector, the electricity consumption is about 61.46 percent of the total consumption. In commercial sector there is 7.14 percent of the total electricity consumed in industry sector, 23.20 percent of electricity is consumed. The agriculture sector consumes 1.81 percent of the total generation. The street lights consume 0.15 percent while bulk supplies consume only 6.17 percent, 0.03 percent electricity is consumed other government sector.
Energy and Power Department through its attached wing PEDO is operating four hydropower projects in Malakand, Swabi and Chitral districts. The total installed capacity of these hydropower projects is 105MW. These hydel electric stations are not only contributing to reduce load shedding but also generating handsome amount of revenue of Rs 2.5 billion for the province.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is also producing more than 50 percent of national crude oil and also producing 360 million cubic feet of gas per day and 350 tons of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) per day. KP also holds province for new exciting discoveries, particularly in Kohat Basin, which has become main area of focus after successful discoveries by Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDCL) and MOL Pakistan.
Currently there are two companies involved in extraction and exploring of the crude oil. The OGDCL is working in three fields i.e. Chanda, Mela and Nashpa while MOL is working in six i.e. Makori, Makori East, Mamikhel, Manzalai, Maramzai and Tolanj.
In Chanda, there is 32.79 percent decrease in production i.e. from 2011-12 to 2013-14 while in Mela there is 26.11 percent decrease. In Nashpa, there is 94.75 percent increase from 2011-12 to 2013-14. In Makori, there is 89.84 percent decrease while in Makori East there is an outstanding increase of 21247.1 percent. In Mamikhel, the increase percentage is 46.44 percent. In Manzalai, the production of crude oil is decreased from 67.32 percent while the production increased by 102.78 percent in Maramzai.
