The ongoing scattered rains in Punjab and other parts of the country have greatly compensated for the low flows in the rivers at a very critical stage of maturity of the Kharif crops including rice, sugarcane, cotton, maize, vegetables, fodder for live stock and fruit orchards.
Punjab Irrigation department engineers told Business Recorder here on Wednesday that as water flow in the four live rivers namely Indus, Kabul, Jhelum and Chenab has come down below 200,000 cusecs the Indus River System Authority had been drawing water from the two reservoirs Tarbela and Mangla prematurely to meet demands of the four provinces at the risk of sowing the Rabi crops from mid-October and gave priority to the growth and maturity of Kharif crops.
However, they said that after the recent rains the provinces have curtailed their water indents in order to preserve maximum quantity of water for sowing and maturing the strategic winter crops including the nation's staple food wheat, oilseeds and grams. Meanwhile, the Met Office said on Wednesday that seasonal low lies over north Balochistan. Moderate monsoon currents are still penetrating central & upper parts of the country.
A westerly wave is also affecting upper parts of the country and will persist till Thursday. However, rain-thunderstorm occurred at isolated places in Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Bannu, Kohat, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha, Faisalabad divisions, Fata and Kashmir. During past 24 hours the rain recorded in millimetres is as follows:
KP: Kohat 30, Bannu 28, Balakot 15, Malamjabba, Parachinar 09 each, Saidu Sharif, Cherat 02 each, Kakul 01, Punjab: Lahore (City 43, AP 12), Faisalabad 12, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Joharabad 06 each, Chakwal, Sargodha 04 each, Mandi Bahauddin, Kamra, Bhakkar 01 each, Gilgit-Baltistan: Gupis 03, Kashmir: Rawalakot 01.
Weather forecast for next 24 hours: Validity (0800PST/06-09-2017 to 0800PST/07-09-2017)
Rain-thunderstorm with gusty winds is expected at scattered places in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Punjab (Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha, Faisalabad divisions), Islamabad, Fata, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, while at isolated places in DG Khan, Multan, Sahiwal, Zhob and Kalat divisions. Hot and humid weather is expected elsewhere in the country.
Weather outlook for next 48 hours: Validity (0800 PST/07-09-2017 to 0800 PST/08-09-2017) Mainly hot and humid weather is expected in most parts of the country.
