Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday directed the parliamentarians to submit details of their assets till 30 Sep. The ECP has dispatched notices to the parliamentarians with a warning of possible membership suspension if anyone fails in submitting the documents within prescribed time frame.
It has been stated that the members of Parliament and provincial assemblies will submit their yearly statements of assets and liabilities of their own, spouses and dependents with the Election Commission by 30 Sep, 2017. This is a mandatory requirement under Section 42A of the Representation of the People Act, 1976 and Section 25A of the Senate (Election) Act, 1975.
Members of the Senate, National Assembly and provincial assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan are, therefore, required to submit the statements of assets and liabilities of their own, spouses and dependents duly signed on each page of the form with the Election Commission Secretariat yearly. The defaulters shall be suspended from respective seats of assemblies.
The ECP has also noticed that in election campaign of NA-120 Lahore-III, PTV gave a live coverage to the rally arranged in favour of Kalsoom Nawaz, the contesting candidate from the constituency. This action is inappropriate under the law as PTV had given a disproportionate coverage to the candidates of other contesting political parties. The Commission directed managing director PTV to appear before the Commission on 14 Sep.
The Commission also issued show-cause notice to Captain Muhammad Safdar (retd), Nawaz Sharif's son-in-law, to appear before the Commission on 14 Sep as he committed violation of the code of conduct in respect of NA-120 by-election.
