While hectic election campaign is underway in the constituency of NA-120 by the contesting candidates and their supporters, a question is being posed everywhere "as to who will win the by-poll." Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz is galvanizing her supporters through political rallies while local leaders of her party are taking the PML-N's message to individual voters.
From 1986 till date, a candidate selected by Nawaz Sharif has been successful. Nawaz Sharif himself contested thrice and emerged victorious. Maryam held a consultative meeting at Model Town on Tuesday which discussed strategy for coming days in connection with the by-election scheduled for September 17. For her, winning this constituency may not be difficult, due to the support base her father has built in the constituency. Her focus as of now is PP-140 which falls within the area.
In the 2013 general elections, Nawaz Sharif only received a 10,000 vote lead from the PP-140 against Yasmin Rashid. As opposed to PP-139, also part of NA-120, Nawaz secured a 30,000 plus lead. Maryam held women workers convention, professional wing workers and traders' convention in the constituency of PP-140. Maryam is optimistic that the people of NA-120 Lahore will again repose their confidence in the PML-N and hopefully it would emerge victorious. During visit of PP-140, mixed trend was witnessed. People complained that since being elected in 2013, Nawaz Sharif has not come here once. Further, they said, the MPA of the constituency has not given due attention for redressal of their grievances.
The PML-N local leaders, however, said that their party has done a lot of work in PP-140. "The PML-N mission is to bring progress and prosperity to the country and raise living standard of the people," they said. On the other hand, Printing Corporation of Pakistan Press (PCPP) is continuing printing of ballot papers for NA-120 by-elections in Lahore under the supervision of Pakistan Army. The Election Commission has given an order to print 335,700 ballot papers, the sources said.
