Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tandojam and Sustainable Land Management Programme (SLMP) jointly organized national seminar on "Combating Desertification in Pakistan", held at the university campus. The programme attracted a large number of development organizations, farmers, faculty members and students.
Speaking at the occasion, Ishrat Ali, joint Secretary Ministry of Climate Change and SLMP's National Project Director emphasized the need for enhancing collaboration of relevant organizations sharing the vision of combating desertification in the country. He said solution to this problem lies in sustainable management of land through judicious use of natural resources.
Vice Chancellor of Sindh Agriculture University, Prof. Dr. Mujeeb-ud-Din Memon appreciated Sustainable Land Management Programme (SLMP) for on-the-ground efforts to combat desertification in 14 districts in all four provinces of the country which also include districts of Thar, Umerkot and Sanghar of Sindh province. He praised UNDP and Ministry of Climate Change for leading the efforts to fight land degradation and desertification in Pakistan.
The Vice Chancellor also highlighted the role university was playing for better land management through its programmes and research in the agriculture sector. Hamid Marwat, National Programme Coordinator (SLMP) briefed the audience about SLMP approaches and interventions for better land management in Pakistan.
He said, "The implementation of the programme will bring considerable financial benefits for the poor dryland communities through the sustainable management of their land resources."
SLMP is striving to achieve the long-term goal of combating land degradation and desertification in Pakistan to promote sustainable management of natural resources, restore degraded ecosystems, reduce poverty, and increase resilience to climate change.
Representatives of various development organisations, hailing from Tharparkar, Umerkot, Dadu and other parts of the province and shared issues, their intervention and success stories.
