In a fresh development, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Friday directed Islamabad police to arrest Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan and produce him before the Commission on September 25. On Thursday, the ECP issued bailable warrants and mentioned that the chairman PTI may be let go by the police if and when he submits a bail of Rs 100,000 along with two sureties and vows to continue attending the ECP hearings unless otherwise is stated. The arrest warrants were issued in a contempt of court case against Khan.
The ECP's warrants have charged Khan with contempt of ECP under Section 103-A of the Representation of People Act, 1976 for failing to appear before the Commission, despite a show cause notice. Khan had said on Thursday that ECP does not have the authority to issue arrest warrants. He said that the ECP has never heard a contempt of court case before his case. "The ECP is working at the behest of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)," he alleged.
