The Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) on Wednesday arranged a seminar to commemorate World Tourism Day 2017. The theme of this year, given by the United Nation World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), was "sustainable tourism: a tool for development." While addressing the seminar, the chief guest, Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashhood said that tourism is one of the leading industries of the world and many economies of the world are dependent on this sector.
On the occasion, the minister praised the TDCP for playing a vital role in promoting tourism in Punjab and Pakistan. "The department is providing all possible facilities to the tourists at its resorts and other tourist sites," he added. According to him, the TDCP has recently upgraded its Patriata chairlift and cable car and it has also started first Lahore sightseeing double-decker bus service of international level, which is very popular among tourists and on the public demand the department has increased the number of these buses.
"An environment-friendly ecotourism resort at Soon Sakeasar is also ready for the opening, which will provide scenic beauty and attractive lakes (Uchhali and Khabeki) with boating facilities for tourists. These lakes are the destinations of migratory birds during winter, especially flamingos.
"Moreover, TDCP Cholistan Desert Rally, Pakistan's biggest motor sports event, has become popular among the national and international tourists; it is a permanent feature of the TDCP events. To cater the fast growing hospitality industry, the TDCP Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management playing its role to provide skilled human resource for the tourism industry," he added.
Rai Haider Ali Khan, Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab on Tourism, said that the Punjab government has taken several initiatives for sustainable tourism and its outcomes can be seen throughout the province. On the occasion, Punjab Tourism Secretary Nayyer Iqbal, Punjab Revenue Authority Chairman Raheel Siddiqi, TDCP MD Ahmer Mallick and Walled City DG Kamran Lashari also addressed the seminar.
