World rabies day was observed at University of Agriculture, Faisalabad to raise the awareness among the masses regarding the growing cases of rabies in the children below the age 15 years. The event organized by Faculty of Veterinary Science was held in the faculty museum where technical manager production at Ghazai Brother Dr Ayesha was the keynote speaker. Addressing the participants she told that around 55,000 people die from rabies worldwide with one death after every 10 minutes. She said that the situation is alarming in Asian countries as the deaths are more frequent in this region.
Dr. Ayesha said as 40% victims of rabies were under the age of 15, so we need to educate the children not go near the pets when they were sleeping, eating or feeding their kids as in such a situation pets usually bite the irritants. She urged the participants to always vaccinate the pets and make aware the children about bite prevention telling them what is rabies, how to avoid dot bites and how to behave to a growing dog. She said that if a pet bite a person, he should wash the wound with soap and apply some antiseptic to avoid the secondary bacterial infection and lessen the concentration of virus at the site of wound.
