As part of a global initiative and under 'Because I Am a Girl' (BIAAG) Movement, Plan International supports young girls and women to symbolically takeover leadership roles in political, economic and social spaces. This initiative designed to give prominence to girls and highlight the narrative of girls' and women's empowerment to inspire others to join the movement for girls' rights and take affirmative actions.
On 6th October, Plan International's sponsored child, Mishal Javed, took over the Secretary of Human Rights seat and highlighted the issues faced by Pakistani children, including early marriages, child labor and domestic violence. Country Representative of UN Women, Director General Human Rights of the European Union, Country Director of Plan International Pakistan and the Secretary Human Rights, Ms Rabiya Javeri, were present at the event.
"All children have the right to be protected from violence, exploitation and abuse. Yet, millions of girls worldwide from all socio-economic backgrounds, across all ages, religions and cultures suffer violence, exploitation and abuse every day. Millions more are at risk", said Mishal Mishal took this opportunity to ask various officials present at the occasion, to reflect upon the protection of girls and work towards improving the procedures so that no one feels insecure. "The takeover is an opportunity to amplify the power of girls, and showcase the commitment of institutions to support girls' issues and equality for girls", said Imran Yusuf Shami (Country Director, Plan International Pakistan). "I appreciate Mishal's vision and would want more girls like her to come forward and show the world that they are no less, each one of us has the potential to do so", said Ms Rabiya Javeri Agha, Secretary of Human Rights.
The takeover serves as mentoring or professional development of the girl, it puts children and young people into decision-making and leadership positions, and encourages organizations/institutions to hear their views and gain insights.
