Farmers belonging to the Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) continued their protest on Tuesday to press the provincial government for acceptance of their demands. Kissan leadership held a round of negotiations with Punjab Law Minister Rana Sana Ullah to discuss their demands and convince the government for its acceptance. However, while talking to media, Rana Sana claimed that parleys remained successful and a number of issues being faced by the growers have been solved and the remaining ones would be solved amicably as per procedure.
Nevertheless, the representatives of PKI said they would not stop their sit-in unless Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif approaches them personally and listens to their issues. Legislators from the Southern Punjab, Secretary Food Punjab, Secretary Agriculture, CCPO Lahore and DIG Operations were also present during the meeting between Rana Sana Ullah and the growers.
Talking to media persons, the law minister claimed that majority of the issues have been resolved for being justifiable. He said sugar mills closed in South Punjab would also be opened soon. He said a committee comprising MPAs Islam Aslam, Shaukat Hayyat Lalika, Mian Naveed Ali, Malik Arshad and Amjad Javed had been constituted to prepare recommendations on the demand of the Kissan Ittehad to be part of a petition filed by the organisation in the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, farmers continued their demonstration at Thokar Niaz Baig blocking entrance and exit points causing severe hardships to the commuters. Long queues of vehicles added to the miseries of people.
PKI leader Ch Anwer while talking to media said that they would march up towards the Punjab Assembly and may take it over if the Chief Minister did not listen to their issues. He also threatened to completely close Multan Road and Motorways if they were not given time by the Chief Minister. The sit-in was continuing till filing of this report.
