A Provincial Review Board headed by a Lahore High Court judge on Tuesday called the interior and foreign secretaries on October 19 with details about detention of Jamatud Dawa (JuD) Chief Hafiz Saeed and his aides. JuD Chief Hafiz Saeed and his aides including Prof. Zafar Iqbal, Mufti Abdur Rehman Abid, Maulana Ubaidullah Obaid and Qazi Kashif Niaz were produced before the board amid strict security.
During the proceedings, law officer Abdul Sattar Sahil said the government had detained Hafiz Saeed and his companions as their activities were threat to law and order situation. On it, the counsel of Hafiz Saeed informed the court that the Punjab government had withdrawn its application to seek extension in detention of Hafiz Saeed and his aides. The counsel strongly opposed his detention saying that fresh detention order was passed purely based on mala fide intention. The counsel argued that the government so far could not present any solid evidence against his clients.
The law officer however requested the court to hear the view of interior and foreign secretaries. The board adjourned the proceedings till next date of hearing. The JuD political affairs head Prof Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki, other leaders of the organization, lawyers and members of the civil society were also present in the court.
