Islamabad High Court on Friday sought a comprehensive report from Ministry of Interior pertaining to implementation on the court's directives regarding taking action against bloggers who uploaded blasphemous contents on social media, failing which Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui hinted at summoning the Prime Minister to the court. Earlier, the court had issued a verdict in August this year about blasphemous contents on social media and asked the government to take action against those circulating such contents on social media.
Taking up the matter on Friday, a single-member bench of Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui inquired from the concerned authorities whether the government has made efforts to bring back the Pakistanis who were posting blasphemous contents while residing abroad. Appearing before the bench, special interior secretary apprised that the Ministry of Religious Affairs had already formed a committee to take action in the matter, saying a summary regarding measures to deal with blasphemous contents would be sent to the Prime Minister soon.
To which, Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui remarked that the government has failed to comply with the court's earlier verdict, adding that the government could have sought the assistance of intelligence agencies to tackle the issue but it seems to be succumbing to international pressure. Expressing dismay over performance of the government officials in observing the court verdict, Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui hinted at summoning the Prime Minister if the same is not implemented in letter and spirit. Issuing contempt of court notices to Interior Ministry officials, the bench adjourned hearing of the case till December 11.
