In a surprise move to complete Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Peshawar in the stipulated time period the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has divided the project into two phases. The provincial government is now going to complete only the Phase-I of the project. The Phase-I was comprised of a track from Chamkani Mor, GT Road to Sher Shah Soori Bridge and from Aman Chowk (Peshawar Cantonment) till last end. The Section from Sher Shah Soori Bridge to Peshawar Cantonment passing from Sui Karno Square (Khyber Bazaar), Shuba Bazaar and Sunehri Masjid Road, which was comprised of six kilometer elevated road is included in the Phase-II.
A source privy to the Chief Minister's House told this scribe that the decision of the division of the construction of BRT Project was taken in a meeting held three days back. The 26-km BRT corridor having 31 stations would be running about 14.9km at grade, about 6km at elevated level and some 4.9km through tunnel. It would also have additional features like 68 kilometers feeder bus route service, high standard bus stops at about seven feeder routes with shelter and advanced passenger information system.
About 383 big and small buses from feeding area would be plying to the main route. Commercial area and one nine-storey plaza with parking and two three-storey parking plazas are also additional features of this project. Formal initiation of work on the project was inaugurated by the Chief Minister on October 19, 2017.
