The counsel for victims of the Model Town killing incident on Tuesday concluding his arguments in an appeal of the government against publication the inquiry report said that trial would not be prejudiced if Justice Najafi's report is released. The court adjourned hearing for further arguments till Wednesday (today).
Barrister Ali Zafar argued that by appointing the inquiry commission, the Punjab government accepted the fact that this was a matter of public importance and, therefore, an independent enquiry is required. He further argued, the government was wrongly claiming that the release of Najafi's report would prejudice the trial of any person or hinder the administration of justice. He submitted that this is based on mere assumptions, but instead the report is an aid and a tool for ensuring that justice is done in cases where the government itself is involved. He asked the court to direct the government to make the report public.
