The Punjab Agriculture Department (PAD) has decided to hold a series of seminars for creating awareness among the farmers about advantages of growing oilseed crops. A seminar was recently held in Lodhran and the second of this series is going to be held in Rajanpur on December 5, said a spokesman of the department here on Thursday.
The spokesman said that sunflower can help increasing the edible oil production of the country. Its seed contains 40 percent high quality edible oil which is very useful for the human health and to save people from heart diseases. Its crop gets ready in 110 to 130 days for harvesting.
The government is supporting sowing of other oil bearing crops such as canola and has also launched a subsidy scheme for sunflower in which Rs 5000 per acre subsidy is extended to farmers through voucher system. Farmers registered with the department can get subsidy amount for up to 10 acres of land. The government has also decided to extend financial support to the farmer in case the market price comes down from Rs 2500 per maund's support price, the spokesman concluded.
