Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad has urged universities to produce maximum scholars in social sciences as society is facing numerous challenges of the new millennium. He was addressing to the audience during the opening session of three-day first International Conference of Social Sciences and Humanities in the new millennium: Challenges and Prospects.
The conference is organized by Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) in collaboration with Virtual University(VU). Dr Mukhtar added that HEC has increased hundred percent budget for social science sector. Pakistan is facing terrorism, extremism and other complicated social problems. To settle these issues social scientist can play their vital role.
Vice Chancellor LCWU and Rector VU Dr Naveed A Malik said that this conference will provide an opportunity to renew contacts and discuss problems of mutual interest with delegates from different parts of country and abroad. Dr Anjum Zia, focal person for conference said, "the agenda of the Ist International Conference on "Social Sciences and Humanities in the New Millennium: Challenges and Prospects" covers a wide range of very interesting items; like complex human behaviour patterns in contemporary Pakistani society, suggesting policy level changes for improving living conditions of Pakistani people and especially those directly related to effects of globalization on political, economic and social fronts in Pakistani society".
According to details, researchers and presenters will be participating not only from Pakistan rather from abroad. Professor Dr Chok Hiew, Mr. Sajjad Imran, Director British Council Punjab Area addressed as key note speakers in the inaugural session held at Pearl Continental Hotel, Lahore whereas rest of the sessions would be held at Lahore College for Women University, Lahore.
The conference will provide a platform for deliberations and discussions with a focus on to ponder upon policy level possible changes to be implemented in the academia in particular and the society in general. The purpose of this conference is to explore new horizons for Social Sciences and Humanities understanding their unique perspectives and draw attention to the possible challenges of the new millennium for Pakistan.
