Development work on mega project of Sialkot Tanneries Zone is briskly underway with the help of different departments, said Deputy Commissioner Dr Farruk Naveed. He stated this in a meeting with World Bank delegation held here last evening. He said that boundary walls and roads had already been constructed in the tannery zone.
The estimated cost of the completion of this mega project is over Rs 3.40 billion out of which Rs 1.30 billion are required for the installation of water treatment plant in the zone and we seek special cooperation of the World Bank in the completion of this mega project, he said.
Leather industry of Pakistan was earning handsome foreign exchange after textile sector of the country and Pakistan is earning US 1 billion dollar annually through the export of leather products he disclosed. The Deputy Commissioner further said that there are 800 tanneries in Pakistan out of 250 tanneries are functioning in ten different clusters of Sialkot and polluting the environment adversely.
About 396 acres of land had already been purchased for establishment of mega project of Sialkot tanneries zone. The Punjab government had provided Rs 29.20 crore interest free loan for the purchase of 396 acres land for the establishment of Sialkot Tanneries Zone. Member Punjab Assembly Ch. Muhammad Ikram and President Sialkot Chamber of Commerce (SCCI) Zahid Latif Malik also attended the meeting.
