Chief of the banned outfit Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Mohammadi (TNSM) Maulana Sufi Muhammad was released from jail on Monday. The Peshawar High Court (PHC) had ordered his release last week after accepting his bail application due to his deteriorating health condition.
On July 30, 2009, a Swat police station had booked the TNSM chief for hate speech against the government. In that speech, Sufi Muhammad had termed the Constitution "un-Islamic" and demanded enforcement of the Sharia. The TNSM chief had been imprisoned since his arrest when the final phase of a military operation against militants was launched in the Malakand region. According to reports, Sufi Muhammad was given bail in all 14 cases due to his old age and poor health.
The Peshawar High Court granted him bail in last case of speech against the state. The TNSM chief is currently hospitalized due to poor health condition. He remained in jail for 7 years. He was arrested on March 4, 2010. Sufi Muhammad was wanted in several cases. He had submitted a petition for bail plea in PHC.
