The government is taking all steps to promote and revive great Islamic art of calligraphy for transferring this legacy to next generations. This was stated by Advisor to Prime Minister on National History and Literary Heritage (NH&LH) Irfan Siddiqui here on Wednesday while addressing a ceremony arranged by Calligraphy Wing of National Language Promotion Department (NLPD) in honour of calligrapher Ustad Shafiq-uz-Zaman.
He said that the Division has achieved success in this mission during a short span of time through arranging calligraphy exhibitions at national and international levels, establishing first-ever calligraphic wing and compiling a directory of calligraphers. He announced that the artistic journey of Zaman, calligrapher of the Holy Prophet's (Peace Be Upon Him) Mosque, will be published in a book for transferring this glorious Islamic art legacy to the younger generations.
Siddiqui said it is a matter of great honour for Pakistan that Zaman is privileged enough to have his calligraphic works on the walls of Holy "Masjid-e-Nabwi." The selection of Pakistani calligraphers in the competition reflects that Pakistani calligraphers have tremendous potential to excel in this field if they are given patronage at the government level.
Speaking on the occasion, Zaman thanked Siddiqui and Chairman NLPD Iftikhar Arif for acknowledging his calligraphic contributions. Zaman said he is speechless over the tangible appreciation and encouragement given by the audience. Prominent Calligraphers Khalid Yousafi and Rasheed Butt termed the calligraphic works of Zaman extraordinary and said he is specifically inspired by Ustad Abdul Majeed Parveen Raqam who was calligrapher of Allama Iqbal's poetry.
While commending endeavors of NH&LH Division under the supervision of Siddiqui for promotion of calligraphy, they said the ceremony to pay tribute to Zaman is actually a way to revive the neglected art of calligraphy. The advisor presented gifts to Zaman while the artists from far-flung areas including Shafqat Ali Javed, Muhammad Shakeel Tabbasum and Muhammad Hanif also presented art pieces to him for expressing their love. Multiple young calligraphers, students and officials of the NLPD and NH&LH Division attended the ceremony.
