Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan 'cursed' the Parliament for allowing a 'criminal' to get re-elected as a party leader and added that he will also consult his party on resigning as Member of the National Assembly. Khan was addressing a Pakistan Awami Tehreek-led joint opposition protest here on Wednesday. He was flanked by leaders of PAT, PPP and PML-Q. He lambasted the parliamentarians for supporting an amendment that permitted ousted Nawaz Sharif to head his party.
While crediting Dr Tahirul Qadri for brining the opposition parties on one platform, Imran was convinced that the Sharif brothers were behind the killing of innocent people at Model Town. He further said that no such precedence can be found in a democratic country where police opened fire on innocent protestors. "In a civilised country, it is a democratic right to hold a protest where police don't resort to firing on protesters," he added. According to him, the people are united with the PAT in their struggle to get justice for the victims of the Model Town tragedy. Both the Sharif brothers are responsible for the killings as they ordered the firing. They (Sharif brothers) are fascists and do not believe in democracy.
He accused Nawaz Sharif of being a stooge of General Ziaul Haq and added that he had welcomed the hanging of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. "Now the same Nawaz Sharif is saying that Bhutto was innocent," he added. He claimed that no accused has been arrested in the Model Town case because the Sharif brothers are behind the killings. "We have gathered here to demand justice and I advise Dr Qadri not to back out from his demand. We will fully support the PAT's cause. If we back out now then we will never get justice in future," he added.
Referring to the child abuse cases in Kasur and Mardan, he said that reoccurrence of child abuse cases in Kasur for the past many years was due to inefficient and politicised Punjab police. "In a civilised country, a criminal is apprehended, but in the case of Kasur, no culprit was caught. When justice is not served, the criminals roam freely. Only after the people's outcry over the Zanaib's death, the Punjab government came into action. Same was the case with the Model Town Tragedy," he added. In comparison, he said, the KPK police acted swiftly in case of Asma's murder in Mardan. He said this happened due to an improvement in the working of Khyber Pakhtunkwa (KPK) police. "Due to effective police reforms, the KPK police have visibly improved. It has been depoliticised; recruitments, transfers and postings are made on merit. This has helped in developing a trust between the people and the police and reducing crime rate by 50 percent in KPK. Even the Peshawar High Court praised their police for good performance," he added.
In comparison, the performance and standard of the Punjab police is zero due to political interference from Jaiti Umra which will only result in denial of justice to the victims of Model Town tragedy and Kasur. "The people's trust in the Punjab police can be gauged from the fact that Zanaib's father demanded justice from the Army Chief and not the Punjab government," he added. He lambasted the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for issuing contempt notices to him for no reason, adding that the Supreme Court has not taken no suo motu action against Nawaz Sharif for making anti-judiciary speeches on various occasion. He believed that he is being politically victimised.
On the occasion, PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that justice still eludes the victims of the Model Town tragedy; if that was not case then there would have been no protest today. He further said that the poor people of the country will remain suppressed under the present rulers as they will never get justice. He claimed that democracy was in danger due to the rulers sitting at Jati Umra and added that they have put the country at risk in order to save their government and escape justice. He urged the people to stand up for their rights. "We must unite to launch a successful struggle to get justice".
