The Lahore High Court on Wednesday restrained the government from taking any illegal action against Jamatud Dawa (JuD) Chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed who approached the court against his possible arrest. The court issued the stay on Hafiz Saeed's petition challenging his possible arrest on account of a UN delegation arriving this week. The court directed the government to submit a detailed reply by March 7.
The petitioner's counsel A K Dogar argued that delegation of United Nations was arriving in Pakistan on January 26 and the government of Pakistan intends to take adverse action against Hafiz Saeed. He stated that the Punjab government had recently detained the petitioner under Maintenance of Public Order for 90 days. However, a review board denied extending his house arrest further as the government failed to justify the detention before the board.
He alleged that all the actions taken by the government against the petitioner had been on the pressure of US and Indian lobby. He prayed the court to restrain the government from taking any illegal action against the JuD leader.
