The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday directed the sugar mills owners to purchase sugarcane from the growers at the price of Rs 160 per 40 kilograms. A division bench headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi was hearing the matter pertaining to the fixation and purchase of sugarcane price over a dispute between growers and sugar mills owners.
During the hearing the counsels representing sugar mills said that they could not purchase sugarcane on the price of more than Rs 155 per 40 kg. The growers' lawyer argued that the mill owners had earlier offered to purchase the sugarcane for Rs 162 per 40 kg, requesting the court to ensure that the mill should purchase it on the rate which it had offered earlier.
When the lawyers belonging to both parties got into heated arguments, the court intervened and directed them not to get too excited. The Sindh Chief Secretary appeared before the court and submitted the provincial government was taking plenty of measures for the betterment of the growers. He said that the government was not in position to subsidize the growers any more.
"We want this issue to be resolved and don't want the loss of the growers or closure of the mills. Sindh government should find its solution," Justice Abbasi remarked. Putting of the matter till a date to be announced later, the court fixed Rs 160 per 40 kg and directed the growers and the mill owners to follow this price strictly.
