The Met Office has warned the relevant authorities and general public about a high risk of avalanches in the Hindukush following aftershocks of a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck the region, the other day. It said that aftershocks of minor magnitude are expected, adding that snow continues falling in the north-western parts of Chitral and Afghanistan. "Due to aftershocks, there is a high risk of avalanches in snow-capped areas of Hindukush," it warned that the concerned authorities and general public to remain vigilant.
In the next 24 hours: Mainly cold and dry weather is expected in the most parts of the country with light rain and snowfall over the hills of Malakand and Hazara Divisions and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Maximum rainfall was recorded in Balakot and Murree: 5 mm, Kakul 3 mm, Chitral, Kalam, Bagrote and Muzaffarabad: 2 mm, Pattan, Saidpur, Mangla and Chakwal: 1 mm, each. Kalam and Bagrote received 1 inch of snowfall and Murree 0.5 over the past 24 hours. Minimum temperature was recorded in Quetta and Ziarat: minus-6, Kalat minus-4, Kalam, Gupis and Parachinar: minus-3, Bagrote, Murree and Skardu: minus-2, Hunza and Astore: minus-1, each. "A shallow westerly trough is affecting northern areas of the country," it said.
