Brazil will harvest a record 59.15 million 60-kg bags of coffee in the 2018/19 season, up from 48.17 million bags the prior year, exporter Terra Forte said in a report seen by Reuters on Wednesday. The outlook is in line with other estimates, with Brazilian trader Comexim forecasting output at 60.7 million bags and a Reuters poll pegging it at 60 million.
Brazil, the world's biggest coffee grower, was forecast to harvest 15.53 million bags of robusta, which is called "conilon" in Brazil, up 40 percent from 11.08 million bags in 2017/18, Terra Forte said, following an "extensive trip" throughout both arabica and robusta regions. "We noticed a very strong recovery in Espirito Santo and (e)specially Bahia. (The) crop started returning to normal levels, although we believe the full potential will be reached in 19/20," the report stated, referring to robusta.
Terra Forte pegged arabica production at 43.62 million bags, up 18 percent from 37.09 million bags in 2017/18. "We noticed that trees were in a process of expelling the cherries. It is normal to happen, but maybe due to the erratic start, they have done it with more intensity," Terra Forte said.
