Chicago Board of Trade wheat futures gained about 0.8 percent on Thursday, firming on short-covering after prices earlier dropped to two-week low, traders said. Ample global supplies and precipitation this week in the US Plains wheat growing region capped potential gains.
The US Department of Agriculture projected 2018 US wheat plantings at 46.5 million acres, up from 46.0 million in 2017. The agency will release long-term supply and demand estimates for wheat on Friday at its annual outlook forum. CBOT March soft red winter wheat settled up 4 cents at $4.51-1/4. K.C. March hard red winter wheat ended down up 5 cents at $4.70-3/4 a bushel and MGEX March spring wheat rose 1-3/4 cents to $6.03.
