The Punjab Human Organs Transplantation Authority (PHOTA) in its meeting has agreed in principle to launch joint programs aimed at enhancing collaboration with the foreign institutions and foundations for the promotion of cadaveric transplantation as well as raising awareness among the masses regarding donation of human organs.
Punjab Minister for Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education (SH&ME) Khawaja Salman Rafique presided over a meeting of the authority which the recommended amendments in the PHOTA Act, to control illegal human organs transplantation. In this regard, a draft bill would be sent to the law department for further scrutiny and afterward it would be sent to the Punjab Assembly for legislation.
Salman said that heavy fines have been recommended on the violation of PHOTA laws. He said that it is purposed that more close relatives from maternal as well as paternal side would be included in the list of donors.
Besides, secretary SH&ME Najam Ahmad Shah, Director General PHOTA Professor Faisal Masood, President PKLI Dr Saeed Akhtar, Professor Ahmad Saleem Warsi, Professor Aziz Ahmad, representative of Punjab Healthcare Commission Professor Riaz Tasneem, Additional Secy. Technical SH&ME Department Dr Salman Shahid & the officers of other concerned departments were present in the meeting.
