Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah on Sunday formally contacted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on behalf of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to discuss formation of caretaker setup at the centre for upcoming general elections. The five-year term of the PML-N government is going to expire on June 1 and the next general elections are expected to be held in August this year.
Khursheed Shah has contacted PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi to discuss the interim setup at the centre as well as provinces, according to a press statement issued by the PPP's media cell. "PTI will soon forward the names of its nominees for the caretaker prime minister and chief ministers to the opposition leader," a spokesperson for PPP said. He said discussions surrounding the caretaker government had been going on within PTI and the nominations for the interim setup would be coming shortly.
The PTI has confirmed the development and said it would actively take part in that process and finalise nominations for the caretaker prime minister and chief ministers in all four provinces. At the centre, a caretaker prime minister will be announced after consultation of the prime minister and leader of the opposition in the National Assembly while in provinces, chief ministers will discuss the same with the respective opposition leaders.
At the moment, JUI-F has its opposition leaders in two provinces - Khyber Pakhtun-khwa and Balochistan, PTI has its opposition leader in Punjab and MQM-P in Sindh province. The role of the opposition leaders in National Assembly and provinces is crucial in nomination of the caretaker prime minister and chief ministers. Under the constitution, the caretaker setup is mandated to hold the general elections within 90 days and then hand over affairs of the state to the elected government.
