The Supreme Court (SC) Monday decided to indict former senator of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nehal Hashmi, on March 26 for using abusive language against judges. The PML-N leader appeared before a three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, in person and submitted reply in the second contempt of court notice, which the bench dismissed.
While talking to the lawyers in Rawalpindi after his release from Adiala Jail, Hashmi had used derogatory remarks against judges. The video of his remarks went viral in social media and it led to the second contempt of court case against him. During the proceedings, Hashmi informed that he had not said anything of its own, adding, "I only stated what the prisoners in Adiala Jail feel. If raising their voice is sin then I will continue to do it."
Hashmi said the prisoners say more than what he had stated. The PML-N leader told the bench that he withdraws his remarks against judges and asked the Chief Justice that he had also withdrawn his 'women skirt' remarks. Hashmi said, "If the Chief Justice could withdraw his remarks then why not an ordinary person like him could be allowed to withdraw his earlier statement." However, Justice Ijazul Ahsan told him that "you are scandalizing the court." Hashmi said in the past he had struggled for the independence of the judiciary and for that even went to jail. He asked the court that not only justice be done but it should also be seen to be done. "My conduct is before the court," Hashmi said. "You called us disrespectful," the Chief Justice remarked.
The Chief Justice asked him, "Still your stance is whatever you had uttered was in 'hallucination'. Now we pass exemplary judgments." The Chief Justice added, "In the past you had tendered unconditional apology for committing contempt of court." Hashmi said that he had sought apology from the court but even then he was sent to jail. The case was adjourned till March 26.
