Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has finally convened its central general council meeting Tuesday to elect its new president after the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif as the party chief last month. According to PML-N media office, the party's general body meeting in Islamabad will be attended by senior leadership, including former Prime Minister and PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif, to elect the party's new president.
Earlier, the general council meeting was scheduled for March 06, but PML-N sources insisted that it was rescheduled for March 13 (today) due to the leadership's engagement in campaign for the March 12 elections of chairman and deputy chairman Senate.
Party sources said that Shahbaz Sharif, the interim president, is expected to be elected as the PML-N president, adding that Shahbaz is being backed by senior leadership for the top party office. Shahbaz Sharif's name as PML-N interim president was proposed by Nawaz Sharif after he was made a life-time Quaid during a meeting of the central working committee held on February 27, 2018 in Lahore. The PML-N media office further said that the general council meeting would be addressed by central leadership of the party while the newly elected president will also announce future strategy of the party.
The party has notified an election board head by Minister for Law Chaudhry Mohammad Bashir Virk to conduct the elections for the slot of PML-N president. The other members of the board include Raja Ishfaq Sarwar from Punjab, Shah Mohammad Shah from Sindh, Pir Sabir Shah from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Senator Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir from Balochistan.
The elections of the party president would be followed by PML-N central working committee meeting to endorse the general council's decision.
