A fleet of 10 air -conditioned buses will hit the Karachi roads, under Karachi Regional Transport Authority's Benazir Intra-City Pilot Bus Project in next few days. RTA Secretary, Nazar Hussain Shahani in a briefing to the Authority's board members Monday said the scheme is to mitigate the grievances of local commuters faced with steady decline in the number of public buses and wagons.
"Focus will be on provision of safe and comfortable transportation facilities to the people," said Shahani during the meeting chaired by Karachi Commissioner, Ejaz A Khan. The one way fare, he said has been fixed at Rs 20 per person while the route will be to and from Dawood Chowrangi to Tower via Quaidabad, Star Gate, Shah Faisal Colony, Drigh Road, Karsaz, Nursery, Metropole, Zainab Market, Press Club, Shaheen Complex and I I Chundrigar Road.
RTA Secretary said the 10 large sized buses being brought on city roads were part of the project's first phase and that number of the vehicles would soon be increased with simultaneous expansion in the routes. Commissioner of Karachi on the occasion said no complacency would be tolerated in sustainability of the scheme aimed at facilitating the citizens.
Efficient transportation system has always been on the priorities of the government and commitment of Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah as well as Transport Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah is well established, said the Karachi Commissioner. He expressed his confidence that completion of different road and transport projects along with Karachi Circular Railway services will help solve for good the transport problems faced by the citizens. The meeting was also attended by Additional Commissioner (one) and deputy commissioner (South), Asif Jamal; Senior Director Traffic Engineering Bureau - KDA, Qazi Abdullah, SSP - Traffic (South), Ejaz Ali Shah, SSP - Traffic (East) Malik Zafar, SSP - Traffic (West), Dr Najeeb Khan, SSP - Traffic (Malir), Majtu Khan, SSP - Traffic (City), Malik Asghar, SSP - Traffic (Central)Zulfiqar Ali Shah and SSP - Traffic (Korangi), Ejaz Hashmi.
