The World Bank is conducting a study on various sewerage lines and Nullahs to improve drainage infrastructure of the metropolis and evolve a mechanism for protection of the adjacent localities in a flood like situation. This was stated by WB officials at a briefing during their visit to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) office on Wednesday. They said that the World Bank, in the light their survey findings, would develop a package to improve the drainage infrastructure of the city which is presently in a dilapidated condition primarily due to negligence of civic authorities and monetary constrains being faced by KMC.
The work would be carried out with the collaboration of KMC and other relevant departments, they said. The visiting officials of World Bank team comprised Senior Urban Specialist YooU Hee Kim, Urban specialist Takahi Mosihi, Analyst Kabeer Dawani, and Urban specialist Sohaib Akhtar.
Whereas, Director General Works KMC Shahab Anwar, Senior Director Municipal Services Noman Arshad, Director Technical to Mayor S M Shakeeb, Director Anti Encroachment Basheer Siddiqui, Chief Engineers of different districts and other officials were also present on this occasion. The WB officials were briefed about 30 major Nullahs and drains including Orangi Nullah, Gujar Nullah , Lyari Nullah, Pichar Nullah, Kalri Nullah, Kala Board Nullah, Malir Nullah, Korangi Nullah, Soldier Bazaar Nullah, Manzoor Colony Nullah etc being administrated by the civic and the issues of the adjacent localities during heavy rains.
