Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA) has decided to conduct election of farmer organizations in water board areas of Faisalabad lower Chenab Canal System for transfer of irrigation management to farmers' organizations at different levels of irrigation networks. The election would be conducted Phase-wise for 85 farmer Organizations of East Area Water Board of Lower Chenab canal and 67 farmer organizations of Western Area Water Board. PIDA has issued a formal notification in this regard.
According to PIDA spokesperson formal approval has been given by the competent authority for the electoral process of water boards of both the areas. General Manager (Admin) PIDA will supervise electoral process of 85 Farmer Organizations on 3875 "Khal Panchaiten" in East Area Water Board on Lower Chenab Canal and 67 Farmer Organizations on 2725 "Khal Panchaiten" in Western Area Water Board on Lower Chenab Canal
It may be added that there are five water boards for the management of the system of distributaries across the province. They are: Farmer Organizations in Lower Chenab Canal (East) Canal Circle, Faisalabad, Farmer Organizations in Lower Chenab Canal (West) Circle, Faisalabad, Farmer Organizations in Lower Bari Doaab Canal Circle, Sahiwal, Farmer Organizations in Bahawalnagar Canal Circle, Bahawalnagar, Farmer Organizations in Derajat Canal Circle, D.G. Khan.
The Farmer Organizations are the basic management unit and responsible to operate and manage the irrigation and drainage infrastructure and undertake distribution of irrigation water within their jurisdictions. They collect water charges from the users and deposit to PIDA.
