Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Sartaj Aziz has said that small industrial cities would be established in special economic zones (SEZs) under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the government is making efforts to achieve 6 percent economic growth rate in current year. Sartaj Aziz expressed these views while addressing the CEOs' Corporate Breakfast, organized to share the learning of Davos, World Economic Forum, by Chairman Pathfinder Group Ikram Sehgal here on Saturday. Diplomats of various counties and people from different schools of thoughts also participated in the event.
He said, "We are going to set up a joint adventure and cooperation of various groups for establishment of industrial zones under CPEC." He said that Pakistan remained stuck at merely 3 per cent growth rate from 2006 onwards for almost 6 to 7 years but during last 3 years of current government economic growth rate remained 4.3 to 4.5 percent and the government is eying to achieve 6 percent growth rate in current year.
Sartaj Aziz said that appropriate environment has been developed for foreign investment while economic development in the country bettered with improved security and law and situation. "We have controlled terrorism and energy crisis in the country to a large extent and suitable environment for investment has been developed in the country." He said that economy not only depends on national policy but also on global situation.
About the CPEC, the Deputy Chairman Planning said that CPEC is mutually beneficial not only China and Pakistan but also for the whole region and is not against any country but is for peace and prosperity of all nations around the globe. He said that the CPEC is not just about road and infrastructure but it is all about people to people connectivity for the brighter future of the world.
About Gwadar development, he said that huge work has been started in Gwadar about connectivity and infrastructure. He said that Gwadar is opening a tremendous opportunity of investment and trade for the countries. He said that Gwadar is a big opportunity for tourism, investment, industries and others. He said that there is 6 percent digital economy of China and Pakistan could benefit from it. He said that job opportunities would be created from digital economy and the Davos should open opportunity for this purpose. He said that Chinese President Xi's idea of One Belt One Road is just a concept to build roads and connects policies, public and intellectuals.
He said that IT industry is of the view that it has the potential to grow and create a big base for employment generation. Chairman Pathfinder Group Ikram Sehgal said that not only China but other countries would also invest in Gwadar. He said that China has played a major role in boosting Pakistan's economy through CPEC. He said that with linking China's province of Xinjiang with the Gwadar port, the CPEC is a collection of projects aimed at upgrading Pakistan's infrastructure and consequently enhancing economic links between the two countries.
Chairman Martin Dow Ltd Javed Akhai said, "We should take step to alleviate poverty and develop human resources, especially women. He added, "We also need to take steps for human development and knowledge economy." Other speakers also addressed on this occasion.
