To mark the "World Oral Health Day" which falls on 20th March each year, the Institute of Dentistry, LUMHS Jamshoro arranged a "Public Awareness Walk" at Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences Jamshoro on Thursday. Addressing the participants, Vice Chancellor LUMHS Professor Bikha Ram Devrajani said that the World Oral Health Day is celebrated every year. It is an international day to celebrate the benefits of a healthy mouth and to promote worldwide awareness of the issues around oral health and the importance of looking after oral hygiene because 90% of the world's population will suffer from oral diseases in their lifetime and many of them can be avoided with increased governmental, health association and society support for prevention, detection and treatment programs.
He added that the campaign aims to raise awareness on the prevention and control of oral diseases globally and encourage people across the world to take measures to improve their own, and their family's oral health. A range of informative activities and educational events are held across the world to achieve this. The Dean Dentistry Professor Feroz Ali Kalhoro said that the World Oral Health Day offers the dental and oral health community a platform to take action and help reduce the global disease burden. The Oral health is not only important to appearance and sense of well-being, but also to overall health. Cavities and gum disease may contribute to many serious conditions. Untreated cavities can also be painful and lead to serious infections. Smoking is a major risk factor for oral and dental disease, including oral cancer. Tobacco smoke is very harmful to gum tissues and other tissues in mouth. Toxins in smoke can cause oral cancer and also damage the bone around teeth which is a major cause of tooth loss.
