Country's religious parties have taken the right decision on the eve of general elections. Now the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) stands revived. Maulana Fazlur Rehman is its president while Liaquat Baloch is its secretary general. The occasion recalls the formation of first MMA alliance of religious parties and groups on the eve of 2002 general elections. The alliance then chose veteran politician Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani, who was the chief of his own faction of JUP, for the presidentship of the party. Maulana Fazlur Rehman was then chosen as its secretary general. In those days, the Jamaat-e-Islami was led by Qazi Husain Ahmed.
Two heavyweights - Shah Ahmed Noorani and Qazi Husain Ahmed - are not in this world. The present-day MMA will find it extremely difficult to re-emerge as the MMA of 2002 because of a variety of reasons. The religious alliance is expected to field candidates to pose a strong challenge to the contenders of other political parties, particularly PPP's, PTI's and PML-N's.
