The Supreme Court will hear today (Thursday) two suo motu cases pertaining to alleged irregularities and illegalities in Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and its proposed privatization. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Umer Ata Bandial and Justice Ijazul Ahsan will hear the cases.
The court will also hear two pending petitions filed in 2012 under Article 184 (3) of the Constitution by incumbent Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Iqbal Zafar Jhagra and incumbent Minister of State and Chairperson Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) Marvi Memon against corruption, mismanagement and inefficiencies in PIA.
The Chief Justice had directed all the managing directors (MDs) of the national carrier, who have served the airline during the last ten years, to appear before the court. PIA's incumbent MD will submit the audit statements of accounts of last ten years before the court.
Another suo motu action pertaining to conduct and dealings of PIA with its passengers, particularly about much lesser amount of refund, will also be taken today (Thursday).
Federation of Pakistan, Defense Ministry and PIA chairman will also submit their replies on the matters concerning to the national carrier's proposed privatization.
On March 1, the Chief Justice had taken suo motu notice of profitable routes allegedly being taken away from PIA and being given to private carriers, especially Air Blue, owned by the Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. The CJP had also restrained the authorities from making fresh recruitments in PIA until further orders.
