In his latest op-ed titled "Curbing corruption through digitalization" for Business Recorder, M Ziauddin has massive reproduced the work of Stephanie Thomson (Here are four better ways to spend that money - Weekly Agenda, World Economic Forum - January 12, 2017) has brought under spotlight some global challenges "the world could tackle with that money - and still have some change left over". According to Thomson, "We only need $116 billion to wipe out hunger as around the world nearly 800 million people don't have enough food to eat. We need only $8.5 billion to eradicate malaria - starting at around $600 million a year through till 2022, dropping thereafter. The world needs $1 trillion to bridge the global infrastructure gap. Infrastructure is literally what keeps our cities, countries and regions ticking over. We need $26 billion to provide basic education to all children as for 100 million of them, says the UN - it's something they can't access."
Look at the amount that is required to deal with challenges the humanity faces. There are a number of families and individuals who possess much bigger amounts of money and wealth. What is actually required is global political will to evolve a strategy through which the world can rid of hunger among nearly 800 million people . The strategy must also examine the possibility of reducing each country's defence spending so that governments in developing countries in particular can make better allocations towards social and economic sectors.
