The PTI on Wednesday criticized the PPP-government for permitting liquor shops within the residential areas, saying the law protects the public places, Masajid and schools from trade of alcoholic beverages. On a call-attention notice during the Sindh Assembly (SA) sitting, PTI's parliamentary leader, Khurrum Sher Zaman Khan pointed out that the liquor trade is being made openly in residential areas, saying "Pakistan was established in the name of Islam but every where wine shops have been set up".
Sindh Senior Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Nisar Khuhro replied that the wine shops are open only for the religious minorities and not for Muslims. He said that the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department does not permit setting up wine shops within the residential areas. MQM's defected legislator, Nadeem Razi demanded for an audit of funds given to Mayor Karachi, Waseem Akhtar.
The house adopted the Sindh Sports Board (Amendment) Bill 2018 with a single vote, as Nisar Khuhro explained the reasons for a change in the existing Act. He said that the amendment to the law is meant to increase the number of members on the sports board. It also proposed Chief Minister Sindh to head the board. "Sports minister should head the board instead of chief minister," MQM's Syed Sardar Ahmed said.
However the house scraped the amendment shortly after opposition showed reservations on making chief minister as head of the board. The house voted to pass the bill at the end. The house also adopted a bill to regularize contract employees who had been appointed on passing an NTS test. PPP's Mir Nadir Magsi asked his government to arrest the main culprits who raped and killed an eight year old girl, Rabia Magsi, the other day in Orangi area of the city's outskirts.
He warned the government of a backlash from Magsi tribe that could unleash unrest, saying that the real criminals are still at large as the arrested suspects are innocent. He said that the government should step up its efforts before it is too late even for him to control his tribesmen from a violent response.
