Jaguar Land Rover’s mobility car door opens automatically when driver approaches
Although autonomous cars are still a new thing, automatic car doors might be the next big thing that will let drivers open doors of their cars when they approach the vehicle or even operate them by gestures.
Automobile manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has created a new ‘mobility door’ that uses a mixture of current keyless entry technology and motion sensors for automatically opening the car door when the person approaches.
When inside, the drivers can control the mobility door with buttons overhead without the need for reaching out and pulling the door shut. There is software built into the infotainment system that displays the status of each door, allowing operation of the driver and passenger doors from inside the car.
Also, there are radar sensors for preventing the door from hitting another car or any other object nearby. The door can also be programmed to close and lock behind as the driver walks away.
Engadget reported, the car manufacturer is already testing the door on a modified Range Rover Sport with athlete and former commando Mark Ormrod, who is also a triple amputee. However, Jaguar didn’t give any word as to when this tech will reach production cars.
Moreover, this technology can prove to be helpful for amputees or people with accessibility needs. Also, this will be helpful for normal users when they won’t have to put something down if their hands are full for opening the car door.
“This innovative Jaguar Land Rover technology would be such a benefit to me and has real power to change lives for those who face problems getting in and out of the car. Opening and closing the car door may seem like such an insignificant task to many people but sometimes it’s the small, everyday obstacles which people take for granted that are most frustrating to overcome for those living with disabilities,” said Ormrod.
