The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX rose 18.76 points, or 0.12 percent, to 16,162.31, extending its recent streak of higher closes to an 11th day. The biggest contributor to the TSX gain was TransCanada with 7.6 net index points. Health care was the top sector contributor with 8.3 net points. Leading the index were Aurora Cannabis Inc, up 10.0 percent, Canopy Growth Corp, up 8.8 percent, and Torex Gold Resources Inc, higher by 3.9 percent.
Lagging shares were Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Corp, down 3.1 percent, Element Fleet Management Corp, down 2.5 percent, and Trican Well Service Ltd, lower by 2.3 percent. On the TSX 167 issues advanced and 76 declined as a 2.2-to-1 ratio favored advancers. There were 11 new highs and 1 new lows, with total volume of 180.8 million shares.
The most heavily traded shares by volume were Aurora Cannabis Inc, Canopy Growth Corp and Aphria Inc. The TSX's energy group fell 0.35 points, or 0.17 percent, while the financials sector slipped 0.52 points, or 0.17 percent. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 0.27 percent, or $0.19, to $71.3 a barrel.
