Pakistan Meteorological department warned on Friday that the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (MEKUNU) has intensified into an Extremely Severe Tropical Cyclone and now lies (0900 UTC) closed to southern coast of Oman, near 16.0° N and 54.4° E, at 115 km southeast of Salalah (Oman). The MEKUNU will continue to move in N/NW direction and is likely to cross the Salalah coast during next 12 hours, as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm with maximum sustained surface wind speed of 160 - 170 km/hr gusting to 180 km/hr.
The Cyclone MEKUNU is currently located at 1306 km southwest of Gwadar and 1630 km from Karachi. None of the area of Pakistan's coast is under threat by this cyclone.
Meanwhile in its daily weather report the Met Office said that weather remained hot and dry in most parts of the country. Mercury rose to 43 and above in big cities of central and southern Punjab including Lahore and Multan. The maximum highest temperature was recorded at RY Khan, Dadu, Sukkur 47°C, Chhor, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, Noorpurthal, Bahawalnagar 46°C on Friday.
It said Continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country. However, a shallow westerly wave is present over upper parts of the country. Mainly hot and dry weather is expected in most parts of the country today. However, dust-storm/ gusty winds with light rain-thunderstorm may occur at a few places in upper KP, Islamabad, upper Punjab, FATA, Kashmir and Gilgit- Baltistan it added.
