Lieutenant-General Asad Durrani (retd), former chief ISI, must clear his position by 28 May over breach of military code of conduct through publication of "The Spy Chronicles: RAW, ISI and the Illusion of Peace" that he co-authored with former chief of India's spy agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) A S Dulat.
This was stated by ISPR official to this correspondent who added that punishment will be meted out according to the book's content and Lieutenant General Durrani's response. Violation of Army law MPML/Official Secret Act 1923 applies to civilians as well as to retired officers, he added.
There are strong reservations over the book's content as events described therein are not even close to reality, army sources revealed. No one is above the law and everyone is accountable for matters relating to national security of Pakistan, ISPR official stated but rejected Nawaz Sharif's demand to constitute a national commission stating that its material is a violation of the code of conduct, not a threat to the state.
The official stated that in the book General Durrani comes across as expounding and theorizing about 'spy-craft and his time in office', adding that the book's main content is a counter narrative to that of the international establishment.
The Book - The spy chronicles: RAW, ISI and the illusion of Peace - contains conversations between General Durrani and General Dulat mediated through an Indian journalist. The issues highlighted include terrorism, reference to Kargil, Mumbai attack, Kashmir and the intelligence agencies influence.
Durrani served as chief of Pakistan's premier intelligence agency from August 1990 till March 1992.
