With an aim to contribute towards combating desertification in Thar and reduce carbon footprint and achieve the target to plant one million trees, Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) has established Sindh's largest nursery in the private sector which has the capacity to nurture 0.5 million saplings at a time.
The area of the nursery is spread over 80 Acres of land, where around 55000 Sq/ft of the area is covered and has current capacity of 0.5 million saplings, announced Umair Aslam Butt, Manager Health, Safety and Environment of SECMC in a issued here Tuesday.
SECMC is a mining firm excavating coal in Thar Coal Block II of district Tharparkar and its allied company Engro Powergen Thar Limited (EPTL) is constructing a 2x330MW mine mouth coal fired plant.
Butt said that the company under its Thar Million Tree (TMT) programme, has successfully grown 245,000 saplings and to induce resilience within the nursery through certain innovations. He said, the nursery has helped them to plant and sustain 160,000 saplings of different local species of Apple (Sarhain), Moringa, Bairi, Babur, Neem and Kandi.
Moringa saplings have grown up to 4 feet and survival rate is 90 percent in the nursery environment, he added. He said that in addition to the saplings planted, the unique TMT programme is of its own kind was initiated in July 2017, that has targeted plantation of one million trees in Thar Coal Block-II and other nearby areas.
The programme is aimed at contributing towards combating desertification in Thar and reducing carbon footprint, global warming and promote a green healthy environment for the local communities, he said.
