Mulk takes oath

Former Chief Justice of Pakistan Nasir-ul-Mulk on Friday took oath as Pakistan's seventh caretaker Prime Minister for an interim period of two months following the end of five-year tenure of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government. The oath-taking ceremony was held at Aiwan-e-Sadr and President Mamnoon Hussain administered the oath to the caretaker Prime Minister.
Outgoing Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, three services chiefs, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, governors of provinces and members of former cabinet and other civil and military officers attended the ceremony.
It was only the third time in Pakistan's history that the National Assembly completed its five-year term. However, two terms of the National Assembly were completed under civilian rule while one term, which came into existence in 2002, completed its term under former President General Pervez Musharraf (retd).
Nasir-ul-Mulk, 67, will run the government affairs till July 25 general election. Justice Mulk is one of the seven judges who signed a restraining order on November 3, 2007, when Musharraf imposed emergency and forcibly sent the judges home.
Nasir-ul-Mulk was welcomed by almost all the political parties and figures including Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan. The name of Nasir-ul-Mulk was agreed upon by former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and former Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah on May 28.
The opposition leader announced the name of Nasir-ul-Mulk for caretaker prime minister while addressing a press conference along with former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and former Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. Nasir-ul-Mulk, who also served as interim chief of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), was born on August 17, 1950 in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). He served as the 22nd Chief Justice of Pakistan for about a year.
Former Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk is a barrister-at-law from Inner Temple, London. He was elected as the general secretary Peshawar High Court Bar Association in 1981. In 1993, he was appointed as the advocate general of KP. A year later in 1994, he was appointed as the judge of Peshawar High Court. He was elevated as Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court on May 31, 2004 and as a Supreme Court judge on April 4, 2005.
