Pakistan People's Party leaders have apprehended that stage was being set for delayed elections. It was what the PPP's stalwarts are said to have derived from a series of developments which they shared with journalists at a joint press conference at PPP media cell after an important meeting of party's Central Election Board which was chaired by party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and PPPP president Asif Ali Zardari at Bilawal House, here on Friday evening.
PPP leaders, including Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, former Leader of the Opposition Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, former chairman Senate Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari and Leader of the Opposition in Senate Sherry Rehman and others argued that Balochistan Assembly's hasty attempt to delay the elections, outgoing KP chief minister's letter for delay in elections, a high court decision against delimitations in six more districts, issues related to demarcation/delimitation of constituencies and the annulment of nomination forms prepared by Parliament have given birth to a profound question whether or not elections would be held on time. They said new demarcations/delimitations of constituencies at districts level and printing of new nomination forms for electoral contestants would take considerable time. They said PPP and its leadership are strongly in favour of timely elections. They said Parliament has power to prepare nomination papers for electoral contestants and this is a matter transcending court's jurisdiction.
Farhatullah Babar said only the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) may tell who is actually seeking to delay the polls. He said they were looking forward to meeting ECP officials in this regard. Those who attended the meeting at Bilawal House included former prime ministers Yousaf Raza Gilani, Raja Pervez Ashraf. Syed Khursheed Shah, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, President PPP Women Wing Faryal Talpur, Sherry Rehman, Aitzaz Ahsan, Nayyar Bukhari, Farhatullah Babar, Murad Ali Shah and Syed Naveed Qamar.
