Former National Assembly speaker Fehmida Mirza joined the Grand Democratic Alliance that comprises of several parties who are opposed to Pakistan Peoples Party in the province. Flanked by her spouse Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, Dr Fehmida Mirza made this announcement at a press conference alongside Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) chief and Hur spiritual leader Pir Pagara Sibghatullah Shah Rashidi, here on Sunday.
Pagara welcomed her into the GDA, saying that Zulfiqar Mirza was his friend and already an ally, and now Fehmida Mirza also decided to join them.
He said they want peace in Sindh, improved law and order, and the elimination of corruption. He said GDA provides an ideal platform to the people and they now intend to expand to Punjab as well.
Dr Fehmida Mirza said her public gathering in Badin on May 15 was a referendum, as the district faced a plethora of problems due to negligence by the PPP government. She said Sindh had the first right over the River Indus, and no one has the authority to deny it or use the water of the river.
"Water of the River Indus cannot be used elsewhere without permission. The water should be supplied across the province without discrimination," she urged.
"Lower Sindh has the first right over the River Indus. This has the contract-like status in the constitution of Pakistan," she said, adding her home district was facing increasing sea intrusion.
She said children of Sindh are deprived of education; therefore, she called for education emergency in the province. Furthermore, steps should be undertaken to provide technical skills training as well. She urged that Sindh police should be depoliticised and everyone needs to follow the constitution accordingly. "We have to rid Sindh of a mafia. We should come forward and strengthen the GDA," she said, adding that it was imperative, whether on their own or a party, to make Sindh independent. She said it was a great opportunity to change the destiny of people of Sindh.
"Don't see the personalities. We need to look at the people's homes and their children's future," she said, calling on others to support them as well.
Fehmida said no work had been done in the last ten years and the province was being pushed to backwardness instead. She said PPP has done nothing for the people of Badin, and now all eyes are on the interim set-up. She alerted that youth would go on wrong track if they were not given employment. She said corruption was the root cause of all woes and it should be eradicated. Zulfiqar Mirza said PPP would see further defections. He said general elections should be held on time that would be beneficial to the country and the people.
