One witnessed a splendid plantation ceremony held at SU Institute of Plant Sciences to mark World Environment Day. VC-SU Prof Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat, Chief Guest of the event planted a sapling to inaugurate the ceremony. Dr Burfat in his remarks on the occasion said that environment had, of late, grown to be globe's greatest concern, as one witnessed unbearably steep rises in the mercury world over, with Pakistan being one of the worst hit states in the world in the given context.
"We are celebrating this important day here at SU today as we want to raise public awareness to what I call 'a silent killer' and an 'enemy in guise'- I mean environmental hazard. We must own the planet we inhibit, we must care for it and we must also play our part in its protection and promotion," Dr Burfat stressed.
Dr Burfat added that unchecked industrialization, deforestation, lack of public ownership and absence of political patronage were among many causes behind environmental deterioration. "We must realize our role, plant more and more trees and impress upon law and policy-makers to effectively legislate to safeguard environments. This way alone we can preserve our planet," Dr Burfat urged.
Those who were in attendance at this occasion included Director Institute of Plant Sciences Prof Dr Rabia Asma Memon, SU Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem Chandio, Dr Shahabuddin Mughal, Dr Khaleel-u-Rahman Khonbhati, Dr Nek Muhammad Shaikh, Dr Riyaz Hussain Mari, Dr Lachman Das, Ms Nabeela Shah, Umeed Ali Rind and others. Later, Dr Burfat visited SU boys' hostels and inspected ongoing construction works there. At the hostels, he was flanked by hostels provost Prof Dr Riaz Hussain Mari.
