Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Punjab president Qamar Zaman Kaira said the party has fielded candidates in more than 90 percent constituencies of Punjab to contest general election and expressed optimism that the party would get votes in the province given its 'people-centric' manifesto.
Talking to Business Recorder, PPP leader and former information minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said the party has launched its manifesto in which "we have focused on the poor, middleman, workers and small farmers". He said PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari would soon visit Punjab to launch the party's election campaign and address various public gatherings and corner meetings with regional party leaders and workers in Punjab.
Kaira said the party would try its level best to get the maximum number of seats from Punjab, especially from South Punjab. "It is of course dispiriting that some electables have joined other parties but this is not the end of road. There are several diehard workers who are supporting the party," he said.
Many private television channels are conducting surveys to seek which party has greater support in a constituency but this is against the law, Kaira said, as the vote is secret and "we should not ask the voter who he will vote for." He said Election Commission of Pakistan should play its due role in holding, free, fair and transparent elections.
"Some forces are trying to damage political parties and their leadership for example the incident that occurred in Lyari during a rally of Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Sunday. It is the responsibility of caretaker government to provide security and safety to political parties and their leadership" he stated.
