The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Karachi has arrested former Chairman KPT Muhammad Javed Hanif from his residence within the remits of District South Karachi. According to detail, the accused was wanted in an investigation against officers of KPT on the charges of corruption, corrupt practices and abuse of authority for illegally appointing 940 employees in KPT in connivance with Babar Ghauri the then Minister Ports and Shipping.
The appointments were made in violation of KPT law, rules and regulations. This huge number of appointments was made without advertisement of vacancies, competitive process, age criteria and medical examination of appointees and in violation of basic formalities.
Majority of appointees had criminal records including terrorism, premeditated murder and robbery etc. The illegal appointments have resulted in loss to national exchequer to the tune of Rs 2.8 billion. The accused would be produced before Accountability Court Karachi on July 4, 2018 for physical remand.
Meanwhile, the NAB after the press conference of Karachi's political party refuted the allegations of political motivation behind proceedings of corruption cases initiated against him.
It further clarified that the criminal case against former Chairman KPT Muhammad Jawed Hanif and others was initiated in November 2015 whereas he had joined the political party in October 2017. The cognizance of the case was taken on an official complaint lodged with NAB by Ministry of Ports & Shipping. Several high powered inquiry committees have also conducted departmental inquiry and declared the KPT appointments under question as illegal.
